HUTCHINSON – Cheer Time Athletics, located at 3201 C N Lorraine, is a new competitive cheerleading organization that helps develop skills college coaches look for.
Started in 2013, Mike and Ashlie Hein opened Cheer Time to give Hutchinson youth a place to help teach those interested in doing competitive cheer. Cheer Time is open to both boys and girls. They also have a Mini Cheer class that is for 3 and up to teach the basic skills of competitive cheer. They also offer recreation cheer, tumbling, stunting and cheer skills classes. The ages range from 3-up. They work with college athletes also.
“First thing I ask any girl that comes in is, if this is something you want to do in college,” said Mike Hein. “Whether its team or recreation, I’ve coached college. Two years at KU. I know what college coaches are looking for. If this is something they want to build for, I start to train them whether they are 5 years or older.”
According to Ashlie Hein, with this being their first year, they have planned to participate in a handful of competitions as not to take on too much. One will be in Wichita, the other will be in Oklahoma City, and if invited, they would be at Nationals in Oklahoma City also.
“Our goal was to do something fun on the side, to help out the community. To give them something they don’t have. We want to make it fun for little kids so they can grow with the program,” added Ashlie.
The Hein’s, who have a combined 25 years of cheerleading and gymnastics experience, keep busy. Ashlie is a grade school teacher at Faris Elementary and Mike teaches at Graber Elementary. He also helps coach varsity football.
Mike pointed out what they offer is more elite than what most public school teams have to offer.
“The difference between competitive cheerleading and public school cheerleading is we don’t have to be on the sidelines. We get our points for peppiness, but not cheers. We don’t do regular cheers and chants. We do dances, tumbling, and stunting. Some people will argue that cheerleading isn’t a real sport, but I feel it’s up there with football, basketball and track. It takes as much.”
“Anybody can come in and talk to us about Cheer Time, we will let anyone try one of our classes,” Mike concluded.
Ashlie added, “We do this for fun!”
