HUTCHINSON - A Storm was made just before school was let out for summer break.
This Storm was not weather related, but made of kids that wanted to play basketball instead of baseball. Storm’s coach Darrin Regier, said “he receives calls before summer from kids wanting him to coach”.
Regier agreed and put out the word that anyone not playing baseball and wanted to play basketball, let him know. A group of 10 kids formed the team and have played in 4 tournaments around the area. They won more than half their games and with being a newly formed team playing against teams that had been formed and practiced for a while, the Storm did great.
“These kids would have had nothing to do over the summer, if it was not for basketball,” Regier said.
When asking the parent’s to compare the team now from the first day of practice, it was a drastic improvement.
“The kids showed a lot of heart, talent and skill but we also worked on self-esteem, sportsmanship, teamwork, and attitude,” added Regier.
The team would like to do this again next summer and Regier plans on being there for them.
“They are great kids and while some days was a challenge we had many days we played and acted like well-oiled machines. I am going to miss working with these kids while they go into Tackle Football and Soccer programs”.
Regier concluded, “I am proud of each one of these boys and thanks them for giving me their time and effort this summer”
