The Hutchinson Jets 3rd grade football team finished the season with a 4-4 record and became a better team over the course of the season. “We were a much different team at the end of the season,” Head Coach Jarod Wannamaker stated. “That’s what the coaches and I wanted, to finish as a strong team. Those boys have a bright future and I am proud of every one of them.” On Oct. 12, the Jets defeated a tough, physical team in the Clearwater Indians by a score of 12-0. “We knew they liked to run the ball down your throat. They were the most physical team we had faced,” Wannamaker added. Powered by a defensive push from Seth Allen at nose guard, the Jets stopped the middle and controlled the line of scrimmage. Outside linebackers Bradyn Rodriguez and Ty Adkins kept the ball from bouncing outside. On offense, Bryce Cohoon ran for over 150 yards, with scoring runs of 85-yards and 30-yards. Late in the 3rd quarter, the Indians ran free up the middle, but Adkins made a touchdown saving tackle and strip at the 3-yard line. Defensive tackle Dominic Carrillo recovered. The defense added a crucial goal line stance to break the Indians. After reeling off 3 wins in a row, the Jets took the show to Andover on Oct. 19 and faced the Giants. On a cold, frosty morning, the Jets gave up 3 early scores to fall down 19-0 at halftime. Once the Jets defrosted, they played much better the second half and got a 14-yard touchdown run by Tyler Tecklenburg. Final score was 19-6. “We dug ourselves a hole, and we just couldn’t climb out. But I was proud of the fight they displayed in the second half. They could have packed it in, but they fought,” Wannamaker said.In the Little Salt City Bowl, the Jets faced the Buhler Crusaders on Oct. 26. Adkins started the Jets scoring with a QB sneak for 53-yards to give a 6-0 lead. Carrillo kicked the PAT for 2 more points. It was the first successful kick of the season. Cohoon added a 29-yard run to make it 14-0. Buhler answered with a goal line sneak from Wade Meyer to make it 14-6. Cohoon added another long run and Carrillo tacked on the extra points for a 22-6 halftime lead. Buhler added another touchdown in the 3rd with a 54-yard TD run by Gauge Stauffer. Blake Ellis added 2 more for Buhler giving the Jets a 22-14 lead. Defenses lead by Blaine Mendenhall, Allen, and Rodriguez for the Jets and Sebastian Cullison and Ellis for the Crusaders kept the final score 22-14. “It was a great game. Some of the boys from last year’s Jets played on each team. They all played hard and were great sports. All in all, great season,” concluded Wannamaker.
