The YMCA new X-Press Basketball Academy has been an success. This 3rd/4th grade team coaches by Bryan Cunningham and Eric Hernandez, is the first 3rd/4th boys teams that was approved for tournament play. We will have an article in the Little Leaguer about the X-Press Academy Program. The Academy also has a 6th Grade and two 5th grade teams that have also been approved for play.
The Hutchinson area now has a Basketball Academy for 3rd-6th grade. The X-PressBasketball Academy was developed in Hutchinson by YMCA Sports Director Darrin Regier who also leads the X-Press Coaching staff.
The academy has developed 3 competitive teams and is working on two more this month. “Kids want to develop their skills at a faster rate than some recreational organizations can offer” stated Darrin Regier. “We have had a great turnout of members to the X-Press Academy, far more than I ever expected” added Regier.
During practice sessions, all kids must go through a series of ball handling, shooting, teamwork, and skill development classes. Each player has a uniform that they must wear to all sessions and attendance at all practice sessions is expected. Once enough players have reached a certain skill level, they will be placed onto a team. Not all members want to be placed onto a team. These players just want to develop their skills through the practice sessions that the Academy offers.
Alicia Coffey, who’s sons is an X-Press Member commented, “The X-Press Basketball Academy has been great! I wasn't sure what to expect going in, but I am so glad I signed my son up. It is a wonderful program that has taken my son to the next level in basketball. My son loves basketball and this program has been perfect for taking that next step. I have always heard that you have to know someone to get on a competitive team. So even if you felt like your kid might be good enough, how do you get on a team? This program takes the kids and forms the teams. The experienced coaches are great with the kids - teaching them proper skills and encouraging good form and smart playing. My son loves X-Press and is playing with a great group of players. It's fun watching them learn to play with each other (improving their team playing skills) as well as developing and improving individually”
The Academy is a month to month program and is run year round. For more information, contact Coach Darrin Regier at 620-662-1203.
