HUTCHINSON - Family is what they call themselves. A group of 15 coaches and 50 kids make up the close-knit club wrestling team, Hutchinson Kids Wrestling Club. “Our team is very family oriented. We don’t call it a team; we call it a family,” said Head Coach Curtis Edwards. “Our number 1 goal is to have the kids love the sport. We want them to be successful, but we also want the to be successful when they fail. Our coaching staff tells them its ok to lose as long as you lose with dignity. Not to throw a tantrum,” added Edwards. Parent and coach Josh Henderson explains the coaching philosophy. “Listen and learn. That’s the main thing. If you lose a match, that’s fine. What did you learn? Let’s move on from it, let’s learn from it. Use what you learned in the next match; to constantly to get better. “ | Edwards adds, “This is the toughest sport they will do in their life. The harder they work in here, the easier life will be out there. To get them ready mentally for something harder in life. It’s ground and pound and pound. We push them.” According to Braxton, the team practices out of the Hutchinson High wrestling room. |
| “All our coaches get along great. We do things together all year round. Keep the kids involved, hungry for next season. For most of them, it’s the toughest 3 minutes of their life. When you are down in life, you don’t quite. Move on and try to success. We aren’t just teaching them wrestling, we are teaching the life lessons,” said Edwards. “We don’t want them to disrespect any team they win or lose against. We want them to practice their butt off and no slacking. Good sportsmanship.” Hutchinson Kids Wrestling Club can be reached by phone at (620) 694-9710 and can be found on Facebook: facebook.com/pages/Hutchinson-Kids-Wrestling-Club/154776891331879.
