After 3 tough weeks, the Hutchinson Jets have turned on the burners for 2 straight wins. “We have made some great progress. The first 3 weeks were tough, but we told the boys that those were in the past and we are starting a new season,” said Head Coach Jarod Wannamaker. “NFL gets a preseason so (the first 3 games) was our preseason and we have now started regular season. I think it has paid off.” Week 3 brought a tough and well-coached Derby 1 Panthers to Don Michael field on Sept. 21. |
The Jets kept it close through 2 quarters after a Tim Traylor 6 yard scamper to make it 7-6, but two quick scores deflated the banged up Jets who lost 32-6.
“I don’t know if it was the heat, or what, but we had a hard time keeping boys on the field,” Wannamaker said.
The next week, on the cold and rainy morning of Sept. 28, the Jets traveled to El Dorado to take on the Wildcats.
Ty Adkins took control of the offense early as he scored late in the first quarter on a 6-yd run. The Jets defense held the Wildcats to a 3 and out early in the second quarter. On the next play, Bryce Cohoon powered his way through a couple tackles en route to a 40-yd TD run of his own.
Defensive beast Bradyn Rodriguez recovered a fumble to set up another Adkins 14-yd TD run to make the score 20-0. Cohoon finished the scoring with a quick 26-yd TD run and Jets won 27-7.
“We controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, and I was proud of the effort they all showed,” Wannamaker stated. “It was wet, cold and miserable, but they played tough and earned a big win.”

On Oct. 5, the Augusta Orioles visited Don Michael field in Hutchinson. Defense dominated the first quarter. Adkins found daylight, broke a couple of tackles before being tackled at the 2-yd line. He would score one play later to give the Jets a 6-0 edge with 36 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter. Augusta would score right before half. The second half was dominated by a gang mentality for the Jets defense. Rodriguez and Leyton Reneau set up shop in the Augusta backfield recording numerous tackles for loss. Strong safety Brady Ollenburger provided a game sealing tackle late in the fourth quarter. |
Adkins would barrel for two more touchdowns of 65-yds and 25-yds. Jets would prevail 19-6.
“Give Augusta credit, they were a tough defense to crack. We were missing some key lineman this week and (Augusta) took advantage of that,” Wannamaker said. “But the game is 4 quarters for a reason, and I was so proud of the fight the boys displayed.”
