HUTCHINSON - The Blue Dragons of the YMCA 1st/2nd Grade Co-ed league finished the season with an undefeated record of 6-0-1. Led by 2nd Graders Tayten Morales, Kellen Schrag, Lisa Selgrade and Mystery Shuff, the Dragons learned ball movement, swing offense and basic 2-1-2 defense. The youngsters include Jacob Meitner, Jack Davis, Isaac Neighbor, Joshua Phillips, Noble Phillips, and Noah Wannamaker. “They play excellent as a team. Ball movement and passing are huge at this age and we had many kids threading needles with passes to Kellen or Mystery inside,” said coach Jarod Wannamaker. According to coach Wannamaker, Meitner and Noble Phillips led the defensive charge with Selgrade and Morales. “Those four, along with Mystery, really pressed the ball from inside the 3 point line. They shadowed the ball and stole passes,” added Wannamaker. | Post help from Davis, Neighbor, Joshua Phillips, Shuff, and Wannamaker help keep the boards clean with Schrag play huge inside the lane. “Our bigs learned to block out and play good help defense.” Offensively, Morales, Shuff, Selgrade, and Neighbor all use ball handling to create a good dribble drive and make things happen for other teammates. “We had almost everyone score at least a bucket, and everyone had opportunities. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of kids to work with. They listened and learned. That is what I wanted to see, and they grew as a team.” The Blue Dragons were Jack Davis, Jacob Meitner, Tayten Morales, Isaac Neighbor, Joshua and Noble Phillips, Lisa Selgrade, Kellen Schrag, Mystery Shuff, and Noah Wannamaker.
