The 2014 Jets 4th Grade Football team (L to R): Dominic Carrillo, Brady Ollenburger, Owen Daniels, Tayten Morales, Seth Allen, Blaine Mendenhall, Conner Chick, Bryce Cohoon, Duncan Chick, Ty Adkins, Kellen O'Sullivan, Gabriel Holcomb, Roman Rocha, Garrett Robertson, Jackson Fluck, Bradyn Rodriguez, Leyton Reneau, Tyler Tecklenburg, Julen Wannamaker and Jackson Wagner. Coaches were Jarod Wannamaker, Troy Adkins, Ty Cohoon, Jeff Ollenburger, Marty Robertston, and Bryan Rodriguez.
Coming into the 2014 football season, the Hutchison Jets were looking to improve on the previous season. "We finished 4-4 last year and had a strong second half so we knew we had the ability to get stronger this year," Head Coach Jarod Wannamaker said. The season started out at home on Sept. 6 against the Haysville Junior Colts. The Jets defense was stifling in a 14-0 victory, with only allowing 2 first downs. Running back Bryce Cohoon scored both Jets touchdowns and placekicker Dominic Carrillo added a PAT. Week 2, the Jets traveled to Derby to play the Derby 1 Panthers. Many miscues doomed the Jets to a 32-6 loss. "That Derby team is very good. They travel to multi State scrimmages and it showed. They just executed much better than us," Wannamaker added. After suffering their first loss, the Jets came home to play the Andover Giants. Looking for revenge from the previous season, the Jets trailed 6-0 when quarterback Ty Adkins hit fullback Garrett Robertson for a 45-yd TD pass. The Jets held an 8-6 lead but a couple drive extending offsides penalties gave Andover new life. The Giants drove and scored the go ahead touchdown with less than a minute left in the 4th quarter. Andover won 12-8. "That one hurt the worst. We had it, but that's football." The Jets looked to get back on course against the Mulvane Wildcats. The new three linebacker defensive look stuffed the Wildcats and the Jets offense took off for a 20-0 victory. Cohoon added 3 more touchdowns. On Oct 4, the Jets stormed into Panther Stadium in Derby to face off with Derby 2. With 1 minute, the Jets found themselves up 14-0 on the back of Cohoon's interception TD return and TD run. Slot back Brady Ollenburger scored his first touchdown of the season also. "The pick 6 was huge. It just took the air out of Derby. We dominated the game. We had many miscues and the score could have been much worse. The boys played with heart." In Nickerson on Oct. 11, the Jets took on the McPherson Bullpups. The Bullpups came in with an opening loss to Derby 1 20-13, but the rolled all opponents after that. "I watched them play Buhler in McPherson. They were big and very good. We knew it was going to be a fight." After giving up a long TD drive in the first quarter, the Jets defense tightened up. Offense got close but untimely penalties killed two promising drives. The Jets lost 8-0. Following the game, Offensive coordinator Troy Adkins said the McPherson coaches were impressed. "They weren't expecting us. Tough hard fought game. Very complimentary." The last regular season game took place on Oct. 18 at Don Micheal field in Hutchinson against the Maize 2 Eagles. The Jets won 54-0. 7 different Jets scored touchdowns, including 3 for their first TDs (tight end Kellen O'Sullivan, slot back Blaine Mendenhall and running back Tayten Morales.) Carrillo added 6-out-of-7 PATs for 12 points of his own. "We had boys who worked hard all season scoring, kids getting more playing time, it was a fun game for them," Wannamaker said. "Of all the touchdowns, the most impressive was Tyler Tecklenburg's TD run. He would not be denied." The Little Salt City Bowl concluded the season as the Jets were matched up against the undefeated 3/4 Holy Cross Celtics. The Jets jumped out to a 16-0 lead at halftime, the Celtics scored after half, but the Jets added another in the 3rd for a 24-6 lead. The Celtics added another TD run, but the Jets took a knee and won 24-13 to win the Little Salt City Bowl for a second year-in-a-row. They finished 5-3. The Jets offensive line of Seth Allen, Conner Chick, Duncan Chick, Owen Daniels, Jackson Fluck, Gabriel Holcomb, O'Sullivan, Leyton Reneau, Roman Rocha, Bradyn Rodriguez, Julen Wannamaker, and Jackson Wagner opened many holes through out the season. "My goal is always to finish a stronger team and we accomplished that. This is a great group of boys, and great group of families. I know many of our coaches and me are looking forward to next year," Wannamaker concluded. | |
